Substation Construction & Maintenance in Virginia

Electrical substations are the critical nodes of the power grid where voltage is transformed between transmission and distribution levels, where circuits are switched and protected, and where the grid's reliability is managed through sophisticated equipment and control systems. Building a new substation—or upgrading and maintaining an existing one—requires a unique combination of civil, structural, electrical, and controls expertise that few contractors can deliver under a single roof.

Pross Construction Company provides comprehensive substation construction and maintenance services throughout Virginia. Our substation crews are trained in every discipline required to build a substation from raw ground to energization, and our maintenance teams keep existing facilities operating safely and reliably. We work with investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives, municipal power systems, and industrial customers who depend on substations to receive and distribute their power supply.

Our Substation Capabilities

Pross Construction delivers the full scope of substation work, from greenfield construction to equipment replacement and ongoing maintenance:

  • Foundations & Civil Work – Excavation, grading, concrete foundations for transformers, breakers, and steel structures, oil containment systems, cable trench installation, ground grid installation, and site drainage. We build the structural base that supports every piece of equipment in the substation.
  • Steel Erection – Assembling and erecting galvanized steel structures including A-frames, dead-end structures, bus support structures, and switch stands. Our crews use cranes and precision rigging to place structural steel safely and accurately to engineering tolerances.
  • Bus Work & Conductor Installation – Installing rigid aluminum bus, strain bus, and jumper connections that carry current between substation equipment. Bus work requires precise alignment and torquing to ensure reliable electrical connections that can handle fault currents.
  • Equipment Installation – Setting and connecting power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, capacitor banks, voltage regulators, instrument transformers (CTs and PTs), surge arresters, and other substation apparatus. We handle equipment ranging from distribution-class to transmission-class voltage ratings.
  • Control Wiring & Cable Installation – Running control cables, power cables, and fiber optic communication cables from equipment to the control house. This includes termination, labeling, and testing of all control circuits that enable remote monitoring and operation of the substation.
  • Substation Maintenance & Upgrades – Performing scheduled maintenance including breaker servicing, transformer oil testing and processing, switch maintenance, insulator washing, ground grid testing, and equipment replacements to keep substations operating at peak reliability.

How PCC Delivers Substation Projects

Substation construction demands meticulous planning and execution. Our project managers develop detailed construction schedules that sequence civil work, steel erection, equipment setting, bus installation, and control wiring to minimize the overall project timeline. We coordinate material deliveries—especially long-lead items like transformers and breakers—to ensure equipment arrives on site precisely when it is needed.

Quality control is paramount in substation work. Every bolted connection, every cable termination, and every ground connection is inspected and documented. Our crews follow utility-specific construction standards and manufacturer installation requirements for every piece of equipment. From the ground grid buried beneath the stone surface to the last control wire terminated in the relay panel, Pross Construction builds substations that perform reliably for decades.
